History

Holdrege Memorial Homes has been providing quality health care in a warm, home-like environment for over 55 years.

In 1944, after years of awareness and discussion regarding the need for such a place, the first action was taken at a meeting of the Holdrege Real Estate Board. It was at this meeting that a motion was made to promote the development of a fund to build a home.  This motion carried unanimously. The first contribution made to this project was received on December 30, 1946.

By 1947, the first organizational meeting for Memorial Homes, as it was named, was held.  The incorporating members were Roy Magill, Cletus Nelson, J.W. Nelson, L.A. Franzen, Robert Best and F.A. Jacobsen.  Each of these men contributed $500 toward the project, and were rewarded with a lifetime membership.

Over the years, these men, along with many other community citizens, worked together to make the Memorial Homes project a reality.  Finally, in October of 1953, the original building named Memorial Homes opened its doors for business. The building had room to house 34 guests.

Over the years, the building has been renovated and expanded multiple times to accommodate the ever-growing demand for skilled nursing care and assisted living.

Along with its ever-expanding facility, the Homes underwent a few name changes as well.  In 1964, the local Methodist church's active involvement in the Homes facilitated a name change to Methodist Memorial Homes.  Then, in February of 2001, the Homes sought to assuage misconceptions that services were limited primarily to those of the Methodist faith, and changed its name once again to, as we call it today, Holdrege Memorial Homes.
